Celebrating 102 years of croquet

Wednesday 20th, on a warm (some would say too warm this early in the season) but brilliant day, we celebrated our 102nd birthday. It was a day of games, good company and good food.

Several games had been arranged in which the participants collected points at each stage and were awarded prizes accordingly at the end of the day.
This year the games were:
'Bowling' in which players from each penalty area attempted to get closest to the peg.
'Bucket Challenge' when balls are hit up a ramp, leaning on a hoop, and into the bucket. This had to be attempted from a distance of 1.5m and from 3m. This challenged you to get the speed just right in order to land the ball in the bucket. Too fast and the ball would overshoot.
'Best of 13' was to get the most hoops, in order, in 13 hits. No one managed better than 4 hoops.
'Six Minutes' was a speed and accuracy challenge with a 6 minute limit. You had to get the most hoops in the allotted time, using the least number of strokes. The best score was 15 hoops, using 51 strokes.
'Peg-out Pairs' is our popular pairs game. Two pairs compete, starting from opposite ends of the court, each pair using alternate strokes to be first to run 3 hoops (round one) and peg out, and 6 hoops (round two). Only tactic allowed was to hit an opponent's ball away, once only, during the peg-out stage, hopefully skittling their chances of pegging out first.
Needless to say there were some very tired, and hot, competitors by the end of the day.
We did manage to get in a group photo, and here we are ..!
